openoffice.org.za is an independent South African publication about the software people use to write, calculate and share documents: free and open-source office suites first, and the everyday tasks they are used for.

What we publish

Practical guides to the questions readers type into search every month: which suite to install, how to open an ODT file, how to add VAT in a spreadsheet, how to spell-check Afrikaans. Each guide is written to stay useful for years, not for a news cycle, and is updated when menus or features change.

Where the name comes from

In 2004 and 2005 this domain hosted the OpenOffice.org Southern Africa community website. Its pages are kept in the archive. The current publication continues the subject, but it is not the OpenOffice or LibreOffice project and is not connected to the people or the association behind the old site.

How guides are made

Guides are researched from software documentation and other published sources, checked for errors before publication and corrected when readers point out a mistake. Photographs come from free licences and are credited under each image.

Independence

openoffice.org.za offers no downloads, licences, training courses or support contracts. Partner stories, paid or contributed, appear in their own section and are labelled.
