LibreOffice Calc allows a South African office worker to summarise sales and stock data interactively, but building an effective pivot table demands attention to details at every step. Start by selecting any cell within the required data and choosing Insert > Pivot Table. In the Select Source dialog, choose Current selection and click OK.
In the Pivot Table Layout dialog, drag category fields such as Branch or Product from Available Fields into Row Fields or Column Fields. Drag the field to calculate, such as Quantity or Amount in rand, into Data Fields; double-click it there to choose another function, such as Average or Count.
Expand Source and Destination and choose New sheet, Selection or Named range for the result, then click OK.
When the source data changes, click a cell in the pivot table and choose Data > Pivot Table > Refresh.
If Date is a row or column field, click a date in the pivot table, choose Data > Group and Outline > Group, select Months or Years and click OK to total by month or year.
