Individuals, organisations and sponsors who wish to be associated with OASA may apply for membership.

If you are interested in becoming a memeber of the OpenOffice.org Association of South Africa, please take the time to read the Constitution, Categories of Membership and the Abridged Membership Rules.

Applications for membership can be made by filling in the application for membership form.



Categories of Membership

There are two basic classes of membership, namely voting and non-voting members. Each of these classes have several sub-classes applying to the circumstances of the member. Only natural persons may be voting members.

Voting Members

Honorary Members
These voting members will not be required to pay membership fees. The management committee has the discretion to appoint honorary members. Honorary members are members for life, but may resign or have their membership revoked. Active members of the OpenOffice.org South Africa Marketing Project are entitled to apply for Honorary Membership.

Ordinary Members
Any natural person may become a voting member. These members may take part in any function of the organisation and are eligible for nomination to the management committee. Should an ordinary member fail to pay his or her membership fee by the due date, their class of membership will be downgraded to that of a non-voting affiliate member.
A membership fee of R600 per year, payable in advance, applies to ordinary members.

Non-Voting Members

Affiliate Members
These members consist of non-paying natural persons who decide to join the association. These members will not be eligible for nomination to the management committee, but may form part of special sub-committees.

Associate Members
These members consist of non-profit organisations or open source projects whom wish to be associated with the organisation. Associate Members are not required to pay membership fees and may be eligable to appointment to the management committee, subject to the approval of the standing committee members. Members or agents of these organisations or projects may form part of special sub-committees.

Business Members
This type of membership is open to any business which wishes to openly associate itself with the organisation. Business members may receive the privilege of appointing a number of normal voting members, at the discretion of the management committee, based on donations and/or contributions made. Employees or agents of corporate members may form part of special sub-committees.
A membership fee of R 2,500 per year, payable in advance, applies to business members.

Corporate Members
This type of membership is open to any national or international corporate entity which wishes to openly associate itself with the organisation. Corporate members may receive the privilege of appointing a number of normal voting members, at the discretion of the management committee, based on donations and/or contributions made. Employees or agents of corporate members may form part of special sub-committees.
A membership fee of R 5,000 per year, payable in advance, applies to corporate members.

Sponsoring Members
This class of membership is open to any major sponsor who wishes to support the organisation financially. Sponsoring members may appoint a number of normal voting members, at the discretion of the management committee, based on the donations and/or contributions made. Employees or agents of corporate members may form part of special sub-committees. Sponsoring members will be associated, at their discretion, with any or all activities of the organisation.
A membership fee of R 10,000 per year, payable in advance, applies to sponsoring members.

Abridged Membership Rules

  • Only the members of the management committee or its appointed representative may make public statements on behalf of the organisation.
  • No member or affiliate may act in a manner deemed to be detrimental to the organisation or its objectives.
  • All members will abide by the decisions of the management committee.
  • No member may use their position, membership or affiliation to the organisation to further his or her own interest to the exclusion of any other member or affiliate.
  • No member or affiliate may use the name of the organisation, its address or logo in any advertisement or court of law without the permission of the management committee.
